The Darkest Pleasure by Gena Showalter

Back Blurb-

HE CAN BEAR ANY PAIN BUT THE THOUGHT OF LOSING HER...

Reyes is a man possessed. Bound by the demon of pain, he is forbidden to know pleasure. Yet he craves a mortal woman, Danika Ford, more than breath and will do anything to claim her--even defy the gods.

Danika is on the run. For months she's eluded the Lords of the Underworld, immortal warriors who won't rest until she and her familly have been destroyed. But her dreams are haunted by Reyes, the warrior whose searing touch she can't forget. Yet a future together could mean death to all they both hold dear.

Hmm...lessee, what to say about this book? I liked it. That's pretty simple, but there you go. :)

Danika was introduced way back in book 1 (The Darkest Night) after her family had been kidnapped by the LofU. They had been kidnapped because one of the brothers had been ordered to kill them. Protection, miscommunication, etc. ensued and Danika has been harboring resentment towards them all ever since.

In this book she's got everything coming at her from all different directions. The Hunters are after her because they want her to infiltrate the Lord's defenses (yeah, sure), demons, gods, etc. Basically she's not safe.

Enter Reyes. Mr. Hero and other things. He thrives on pain and likes to do nutty things like jump off bridges, buildings, etc. to appease the demon Pain that he's stuck with. Poor baby. Nothing makes him happier than when he's in sheer agony, so the fact that he's pining over Danika just thrills him to pieces (note sarcasm).

They get stuck together. Argue. Make Love. Argue some more. Danger! Protecting. Oh noes, someone dies. Or do they? Basically, it's a never ending say what through out the whole book.

Now, I did say that I liked this book, right? And I did. It's fun and adventurous and stuff. The sex was kind of blah, though it could've been even hotter. I think Ms. Showalter is a bit scared of the BDSM lifestyle because the sex was pretty tame. Not complaining, just stating an opinion. :)

I liked Danika. When we were first introduced to her way back when I was pretty ambivalent towards her, but she grew on me. She won't take crap from anyone, especially from this guy she totally lusts after but scares her too.

Reyes. Hmm...well, he wasn't hopeless. I do have one question though. Why did he tell her EVERYTHING when he knew it wasn't smart? Just curious. Annoying, but whatever. He loves her though and wants to take care of her. I thought it was funny that he thought she was this paragon of virtue and light, especially after we find out what she did to someone before hooking up with him again. Quite funny.

Irritating parts? The Hunters. They're so...one-dimensional. I would love to find villains that are everything: good, bad, human, well-written, but they are so few and far between.

The fact that Danika was cold all the time (with no real reason why) and that Reyes was the only one who could warm her up (eye roll)

Things I liked. What Danika is. You'll see.

The relationship between the Lords. Very cool. However I have a question I'd love to have answered. Why is it that in all of these paranormals or Urban fantasy, if there is a group of men like the LotU or the BDB or anything, that there's always a hint of m/m love going on? I mean, even the ones that are supposed to be 100% hetero are all in love with their buds. It's weird and kind of throwing me off a bit. Just curious.

Anything else? Oh yeah...wait until you find out who the ultimate baddie is. Talk about a kick in the pants. Make sure you read very carefully, because I almost missed it. We shall see how that switches things around as we move along.

My Rating: C+
